“January’s Scion”
(c) 2022 by Michael L. Utley

“January’s scion, born of winter
messenger of midnight’s dark domain
harbinger of fearful futures
herald of the past’s persistence
bearer of remembrances of
what shall surely be

I’ve succumbed to January’s Janus
peering ever forward and behind
frozen firmly on the threshold
of what was and what may soon be
doomed to bear the weight of all things
for eternity…”

    1. Thanks so much. Stuck in the past, terrified of the future…yup, that’s me. (Plus, my birthday is in January so there’s that too.) 😃 I’m pleased to know you found this one to your liking. I was playing with the the concept of two-faced Janus, looking both forward and behind at once while stuck firmly in place, afraid to move. I truly appreciate your constant support. It means so much to me, my friend. 😊

    1. Thanks a bunch, Iseult, for your kind words. Yes, feeling stuck between past regrets and future worries keeps us from being in the present, and it’s not a good place to be. I appreciate your support as always, my friend. Here’s wishing you a happy week ahead. And thank you for the birthday wishes! 😊

  1. First, congratulations for another wonderful poem published. Sharing your gifts! Second, just wow! I know I say it often, but you have such a mastery of emotion and imagery. And word choice enhances the mood. Great work, Mike! Well deserved.

    1. Thank you very much, Peggy. Seriously, your kind words really inspire me. This one is pretty dark, but you know me–I love intense imagery, so this one was fun to write despite the subject matter. I like coming up with odd non-rhyming syllabic structures that provide a natural flow, too, which seems to coax the words out. The lingering sense of being stuck between the past and the future was the basis for this one, something I can’t seem to shake just yet. Regret and fear and uncertainty. The human condition…

Your kind support is a blessing, my friend. I appreciate you and I’m glad you’re a part of this little community of ours. 😊
