“Ripples”
(c) 2017 by Michael L. Utley

“There are no ripples
On this frozen pond
The
puk-puk-puk of
The pebble
Skittering on iced skin
Dampened by
Frost-thick air
Breath caught short
In lung-numbed gasps
Silent words
Suspended
In wintry sighs
Eyes pools of
Frigid tear-prisms
Bitter empty gelid rainbows
Where are you…”

      1. The pleasure is all mine, Mike. Been away for so long, dear brother, over many issues. I’m rolling with the tides and thankful to God yet for being alive. Glad to be here again and to be able to read you. Your writings and photography are the best things one would want to see. Soon, just soon enough, I’ll take a walk through your site. Thanks for your rousing welcome, and have a good week, bro.

  1. Congratulations Mikey. 🎉 A fresh read for some reason. Like picking up an old book of poetry or a novel. You always see things differently. Very nostalgic..what could’ve been. Some relationships promise so much, but eventually fall flat..and I always ask myself what am I doing wrong?
I always loved this piece my bro. 💖

    1. Thanks, man. Yep, this piece finally made its way to Masticadores. I’m like you: when things go badly, I’m always questioning myself as to what I may have done wrong, buying stacks of self-help books to self-analyze through sleepless nights, and in the end I’m none the wiser for the wear and tear on my heart and soul.

I truly hope the girl in this poem finally got to see the Northern Lights. She wanted that so badly…

Thanks for your support, Nigel. Always a pleasure to have you stop by. 😊

    1. Thanks, Bruce. It’s one of those based-on-experience poems where dreams were shared but never realized, leaving such huge holes in my heart. I still ponder these thoughts all these years later, but writing about them helps put them in a better place. Thanks for stopping by, good sir! I appreciate it. 😊

      1. Mike, I also wanted to thank you for checking out some of the older posts on my site. Have a new one ready to go…and since it has been a year since the last post it probably is time. 🙂

    1. Thank you kindly. Xenia, for your warm insights. We who love nature can’t help but to see the world through nature’s eyes, I suppose, and that’s a good thing. The steady, calming influence of nature really soothes a hurting soul. I appreciate you, my friend. All the best from cloudy Colorado! 😊🌦

    1. Thanks so much, Kirsten. Yes, all those locales were places she wanted us to visit, romantic getaways, exotic destinations. Never got to fulfill those dreams, but they linger anyway after all these years. Darn memories–who needs ’em? 😀 Oh well.

It’s always a pleasure to have you visit, my friend. Thank you kindly, and happy Thursday! 😊

  3. I have read this before and I can’t imagine reading you without leaving a comment. It must have been reblogged here. Regardless, it was a chance to read it again and boy did I. Your words are like a musical ballad that takes us down the missing ingredient that took a well planned trip for someone loved to share it with. Instead this love instead of being early does not make the plane. This is but a reminder at each stop at the romantic wonderings imagined at each special place. Such a beautiful and romantic trip if this was real life and if just your creativity it is amazingly creative. There are so many ingenious metaphors as well throughout this piece. I was truly heart-struck when reading this:

    «You missed our train
    To the Rockies
    Where larkspur and columbine
    Awaited you with open arms
    And later mourned in silence
    My singular form without you
    By my side
We did not hold hands in
    Flower-burst mountain meadows
    Azure lakes reflected only
    My lone countenance»

Such an amazing piece Mike, you never disappoint and I am truly touched every time I read your work at your prodigious talent. Thank you so much Gobblers for sharing Mike’s amazing work and congratulations on another publication Mike. Hugs and love, Joni

    1. Thanks a bunch, Joni. This poem is based on a few locations she wanted us to visit. She thought it would be so romantic to travel to these exotic places, and she’d share her ideas with me, as well photos she’d found on the internet. We had hopes and dreams, but none were ever realized. I couldn’t get those memories out of my head for so man years, so I finally wrote about them. I imagined we’d plan to meet at these places and when I’d arrive, she would never show up, and I’d explore my feelings of sorrow and loneliness. So, yes, this poem is based on “real dreams” we shared but were never able to achieve. She lived in Singapore, which is why the final section is the most heart-rending as I imagined how it would have felt had I traveled there and she never showed up at the airport to greet me…

I appreciate your never-ending support, my friend. I know you’re incredibly busy right now, so I’m truly grateful that you took a few moments to read and comment. It means so much to me. Kindest thanks, Joni. 😊

  4. Another stunning poem full of nostalgia, Mike, that tugs at the heart. Your words carried me back to the past, but I love how you end it…

One ripple is all I ask
One ripple to finally reach you
    I’ll save a pebble
    Just in case

Beautiful and poignant! Congratulations, and it’s wonderful to see your work being showcased on Gobblers! ❤️

    1. Many thanks, Lauren. Yes, that last section reflects the hopeless romantic side of me. I’m not sure if it still exists, but I hope it does, even if I never get to express it anymore. We all need to save one last pebble, just in case…

I’m so glad to know you enjoyed this one. Thanks as always for your kindness, my friend. I appreciate you. Enjoy your special day! 😊🎂
