“There is no air
Down there
Down in the dark
Where I choke
On my life
Nature abhors
A vacuum
But rage
Thrives
Therein…”

  1. Mike, what a brilliant creative interpretation of what it must feel like to be in a deep depressive state. Using the example of the fish dying and left on the shore to slowly suffocate seems an extremely efficacious way of explaining similarities I have heard from other friends. Depression is by far the most prevalent, representing 99% of all mind-brain illness. *

I believe, obviously, or I would not have written, «One Petal At A Time,» that writing about issues that are difficult and how those feelings or emotions relate to you – will also relate to others. Reading about how depression affects you, and lets others know that they are not alone in their episodes of depression. It is a kindness and a gift to be honest so that others don’t feel alone, while writing such gorgeous poetry.

    DEPRESSION:

Affects over 18 million adults (one in ten) in any given year.3
Is the leading cause of disability for ages 15-44.4
Is the primary reason why someone dies of suicide about every 12 minutes. – over 41,000 people a year.5
In comparison: homicide claims less than 16,000 lives each year, according to 2013 CDC statistics.
*The above statistics come exactly as written from the 2023 report from «Hope For Depression Research Foundation.» Text or Call 988 in the US for both english and spanish for the suicide hotline.

Thank you so much for publishing Mike’s words for I truly believe they do a service to not only use his amazing talents but also for educational purposes. Many thanks to the magazine.
