“Clarity”
(c) 2024 by Michael L. Utley

“in my twilight world the seasons blur
snow on flowers, freezing summer rain
I seek clarity

dim uncertainty
gloaming settles on this silent vale
neither night nor day exists for me

in the mist beyond the frozen stream
yurei whisper in the burning woods
Yomi’s fey lament

nowhere left to go
hesitance and indecisiveness
stranded on the threshold of the fates…”

  1. Dearest Mike, my treasured friend – I love your piece as there is so much truth here. There is total craziness in the weather alone. It is a self-inflicted chaos. We have known for years what at least the United States needs as I see other countries doing great things with technology to make their part of the world a better place. I must say that I understand and get your words and with only silence it must be even more profoundly read and seen through more sensitive eyes. I loved the way you talked about the references to the weather. The ancient gods trying to fulfill their destinies.

So much in this poem. I love have creatively you found a way to talk about global warming and the total crazy and more and more dangerous threats to all of our countries by the lack of education on this subject.

I saw reality in your poem and I think many of those who read it did too, but of course we are all hopeful that things will suddenly change – I am grateful for those countries that see the great need for change in our world and even the children which get a better education then those in the US see the need to face the pursuit of change in hopes for their on future.

Just a brilliant write as always and an honor to read your work. So grateful for the publications here. So a big thank you to Gobblers for publishing your work. Love you my friend.

    1. Thanks, Joni. Yes, there’s a lot going on in this piece. Mainly, I was writing about how certain politicians spread lies and conspiracy theories and use gaslighting tactics to confuse people to the point where they become easy to manipulate (I think you know who I’m talking about). A lie told loudly enough and often enough will be believed by many, and there are some very effective liars in this country right now.

I can understand how one could see climate change in this piece, for sure. I used nature images to try to convey the destruction of truth and reality that renders hope moot and facts worthless. It’s absolutely certain that some people lie about climate change to enrich themselves, regardless of the damage they do to our planet. So, yes, this poem can be seen in many ways.

We now live in a world where “alternative facts” are a thing (good lord, what has become of us?), and unconscionable people spread untruths like some sort of foul manna for the unwashed masses to consume. It feels hopeless at this point. When we can no longer recognize the truth, the truth ceases to exist…

Thanks as always for delving into my poetry, Joni. It’s fascinating to read your take on things. Here’s hoping this chaos of lies will finally end and truth can be embraced once again. We have less than two months to figure this out. I hope we don’t blow it.

      1. I can see that as well and could not agree more. Poets often are afraid to talk about political issues. Bob Dylan won the Noble Prize for his sometimes controversial lyrics. People made fun of his voice and said he couldn’t sing. The fact that a convicted felon is running for President of our nation is proof of how crazy the world has become indeed. We won’t eat in a public place with Fox News on the Radio because of exactly what you are talking about. So I suspect that if He were to somehow win the election our world as we know it would cease to exist. The fact that so many people have been brainwashed into believing in this person is frightening enough. As so many of our basic rights would in fact cease to exist. His 2025 plan is a frightening example of the potential dictatorship we would likely immediately be experiencing. So I applaud your courage and efforts as a writer to speak up when so many want to remain silenced by their fear of offending. As a woman I am horrified that he is not already imprisoned. Much love Mike. ❤️❤️❤️

    2. I’m in total agreement with you, Joni. In 2019, I went to a local Arby’s restaurant and they had fox news playing on the tv. I emailed Arby’s corporate headquarters to complain (never heard back from them) and haven’t patronized an Arby’s since. My parents and most of my relatives fell prey to that media outlet’s propaganda. There’s actually a right-wing extremist hate group in my little town of 9,000 people, heavily armed and rancidly racist and harassing the local indigenous people and the small LGBTQ+ community here. This RW illness is everywhere. What a nightmare, indeed…

Thank you for your support, dear friend. It means a lot to me. I know my words may not have an impact on anyone who really needs to read them (because those people will never read what I write), but I feel the need to speak out now and then, you know? Here’s to light and hope, my friend. May we overcome this present darkness and see the light again.

  2. The poem feels like the process of growing up. Losing the clarity of the world when we were just kids not so long ago, so confident of our intuition. We get confused when ambiguity prevails in the adult world. Thanks for the piece. I like it.

    1. Thanks so much, Bruce (and please pardon my late reply). I’m truly grateful for your kind appraisal of this poem. You’re right, of course–there’s so much ambiguity in this world nowadays that so many folks don’t know what to believe anymore. And worse yet, there are plenty of people out there who exploit this confusion for selfish gains and political points. It’s gotten to the point now where it’s become dangerous and frightening.

I appreciate your wonderful comment. Thanks for stopping by. 😊
