“When Ivory Kiku Bloom”
(c) 2024 by Michael L. Utley

“it’s my hope in time to come
when ivory kiku bloom
you’ll remember me
as I remember you

those days so long ago
in absence of joy
fraught with fear and agony
you gazed into the abyss

what did you see in the din
and darkness of depression
what peered back at you
shattered your very soul…”

    1. Thanks, Peggy. Yes, it’s a sad poem about seeing those we love suffer, and feeing powerless to help them. It can be soul-crushing, and we spend our lives wondering if there’s more we could have done. All we can do is try our best, eh? I appreciate your kind support, my friend. 😊

  1. Mike your beautiful poetry spotlights the beautiful words and thoughts that come from within your heart. Your ability to empathize, love, share your love, and help us visualize the suffering of others to this degree spreads a light that leads to many.

This piece is a sad one but again shows your deep empathetic nature and love for another who can not see their own light or the love they once possessed and shared. This stanza really touched and pulled my heartstrings at the same time:

«thus you mourned a life lost
    buried your own soul
    oblivion’s rueful loam
    brings forth its bitter harvest»

I also thought the way you both started and ended this piece was done with the image of something so stunning and beautiful «the Ivory KiKu» which I saw as a metaphor for hope and peace.

You never disappoint my friend and I always love your work so much. Congratulations on your publication Mike. Sending my love, Joni

    1. Thanks so much, Joni. Your in-depth comments always touch my heart. This really is a sorrowful piece, and the person it’s about meant so much to me, yet I have no idea what happened to her or if she’s still on this earth. Abject sorrow is such a unique kind of pain. I wish I could have done more to get through to her, to save her. I’ll doubt myself until my dying day, wondering if I could have done more.

I appreciate your insights so much. Your kindness knows no bounds, my friend. Thank you for your wonderful support and friendship. I’m always honored to have you visit and read and comment here. 😊
