“Still I Toil On”
(c) 2024 by Michael L. Utley
“my old hoe is dull
and the weeds
resist its blade
still I toil on
iron sharpens iron
rust begets rust
the crucible of life
makes or breaks
which shall I choose
do I even have a choice…”

Wonderful analogy of life! Love “garden of regrets,” we all have one. And we all continue “toiling on,” moving through our lives as best we can. Great poetry! Prayers and blessings, my friend!

Mike what an outstanding publication – congratulations! I too am grateful for these publications as your work is brilliant.
This piece is so full of imagery – “the willow,” especially enticed me and I saw her as you did through your description, as a:
«her sultry-shy gaze
beckoning me
offering respite
from noonday sun
and I watched from afar
as egret and kitsune
nestled in her shadows
and I yearned for her»
Your lines are so intertwined with nature’s beauty, along with burdens that can weigh the very soul of a person to a state of just hanging on. Mike, I love all your work but this piece truly touched my heart in a way that this landscape of life was laid out in front of me and I could feel the yearning and need for your respite. What an amazing poet you are and people love to read your gorgeous work. Thank you to Gobblers for publishing this piece, and thank you Mike for this outstanding piece of writing. Sending love and hugs, Joni ❤️

Thanks a bunch, Joni (and please forgive my tardy reply). This piece really means a lot to me. I’ve missed out on so many experiences in my life for various reasons, and I find myself alone now near the end and wondering where the time went, looking back with so many regrets, wishing I’d been brave and taken more risks in life rather than giving into fear. A life lived alone is not a life worth living. I missed out on “the willow,” and I’ll never have another chance at that kind of happiness. All I can do now is write about it and hope other people find happiness, even if I never did.
I appreciate your feedback so much. Coming from someone as brilliant and talented as you, it means so much to me to read your kind words. Thanks for being here, Joni, my friend. 😊

Mike, your words are a gift and I feel privileged to read them. I feel that I relate to so many things you have expressed and treasure your talent as a writer and the great gift of your friendship. You never have to apologize to me. My health has not allowed me to be active on line either. Honestly none of us can truly predict our futures, but I think your life is a long way from over. ❤️🙏❤️
