My interview featured at Hotel by Masticadores

Hey, friends. The wonderfully kind Michelle Navajas, editor of Hotel by Masticadores, recently conducted an interview with me which is now live for anyone who might like to check it out. It’s such a humbling honor to be featured at Hotel in such an intimately personal manner. By nature I’m extremely introverted and quiet, but I felt completely comfortable with Michelle and her insightful questions, and I hope my responses shed a little light on what it’s like to be a deaf writer/photographer in a hearing world that so often turns a blind eye upon those with disabilities.

Thank you so much, Michelle, for this opportunity to share a little of myself with your readers at Hotel. Your warm and generous nature made this interview a lot of fun and allowed me to open up, and for that I’m deeply grateful.

  1. That was an amazing, vulnerable, and profound piece, Mike. Thank you for allowing us all that glimpse into your heart. I am a person of faith so I am going to pray that your writing and photography and any other creative outlet you pursue continues to provide the healing you seek and so richly deserve.

    1. Thanks so much, Russ. Michelle’s questions made it easy to open up and share what makes me tick, you know? Yes, there’s a lot of darkness in there, in my past, and I’m still trying to figure out a lot of things. The act of creation is crucial in helping keep depression at bay. And I appreciate your prayers. My faith has taken a beating over the years, but it’s still there. Every little bit helps, my friend.

Thanks again for your kindness. I appreciate you and your wonderful support. 😊

  2. Mike, the way you’ve channeled such profound challenges into beautiful poetry and photography is nothing short of remarkable. Your ability to find solace and expression in nature, even amidst silence, speaks volumes about your resilience and talent.

Your honesty and courage in sharing your struggles and triumphs make your work all the more meaningful. Thank you for reminding us of the power of art to heal, connect, and transform. Keep creating—your voice is truly powerful and needed.

    1. Thanks, David. I always feel sort of funny talking about myself in these interviews, but Michelle’s questions made it easy to just let go and be myself. Honestly, I don’t know where I’d be without some sort of creative outlet. When the writer’s block hits (eight months at this point), it can get pretty dark in my life, but when it’s flowing, it’s so calming. I wish I were able to write daily as you do (and produce the consistent high level of quality of your work). I’ll have to settle for my writing-in-spurts approach, I suppose.

Your friendship and support mean so much to me. You left a comment on my blog in September 2021 regarding your father’s deafness, and since then you’ve been a constant presence in my personal blogosphere, and I thank you for that. I’m proud to call you a friend, David. 😊

    1. Thanks, Nigel. Your kindness is very much appreciated. I haven’t responded to all the comments over at Hotel yet, but I’ve read them, and yours was so moving, man. Means the world to me that my words connect with you. It goes both ways–your work moves me, too, and I admire your talent, intelligence, compassion and integrity. Thanks for being such a good friend, Nigel. I appreciate you, brother. 😊

    1. “Oddballs R Us,” right? 😊 You’re right, of course–our challenges make us who we are, and much of the time those challenges can make us stronger, more resilient, better people. I’m not very adept at dealing with “life stuff,” but I’m still around so I suppose that means something. Thanks for your kindness, Jeff. Much appreciated, my friend. 😊

    1. Thank you so much, Aaysid. You’re so kind. I’m stoked to know that some of the authors whose writing was so important to me also appeal to you! There were so many I left out, but those I listed are pretty huge to me. Your support is wonderful, and I truly appreciate you and your presence here on WP, my friend. Thank you for stopping by to say hello, and here’s wishing you a good rest of the week. 😊🌸
