“A Summer’s Field in Winter”
© 2022 by Michael L. Utley
“let us sift through summer’s solemn ashes
let us scavenge rusted hopes from twisted
hulks of yesterdays amid the swelter
and the din of frigid silence
as crows circle
this broad swath the acreage of sorrow
garden of the gods whose feckless mewling
echoes ‘cross the eons and the seasons
crumble into dust as autumn
gives up her ghost…”

I live in Colorado, in the United States. It’s 6;47 a.m. here, a half a world away, and the day is just beginning. How wonderful to have good friends so far away! 😊

Mike, this piece is beautifully written and exquisitely laid out for us to feel emotionally. I love the comparisons with the hardships and seasons.
«thus the world was burned and we burned with it
rendered lurking shadows in the gloaming
flesh and bone have failed us as the season
of regrets approaches; we have
earned winter’s wrath»
As if there is redemption for our planet or government in the seasons. Wouldn’t that be a dream, indeed? Your work is brilliant in the piece, Mike, and I love reading your work. I know you are just getting warmed up for what is to come. Thank you Mike, for sharing your talent. Sending you hugs and love from us both our friend.

Thanks so much, Joni. Yes, I agree–I wish the changing of the seasons would usher in a change in our government (man, we really need an intervention of some sort, don’t we?). Your support is so appreciated, my friend. It keeps me going. Sending love to you and Scott, from snowy Colorado. 😊❄️
