(#28)

Sere crone winter sheds
Iced waraji at the door
Hangs her hiemal veil
On the windows, frigid laugh
Desecrates the sacred place

…..

(#29)

Shima-enaga
Silver-throated winter-borne
Yuki no tori
Huddle in Hokkaido chill
Little clouds alight on branch

    1. Thanks, Robbie. Yeah, I left comments off on my other piece today. Didn’t want to have to deal with right-wing trolls disputing uncomfortable facts about gun violence. It’s an epidemic here in the States, for sure, and a horrifying one at that.

  1. I’ll be getting out my reference materials for this batch, Mike. Lol. Heading over to read, my friend.

And thank you so much for your most recent post. I lost my brother to gun violence. Your post is powerful and perfectly expresses my thoughts and outrage.

    1. Thanks so much, Diana. I’m always happy to keep you on your toes with my haiku, senryu and tanka. 😊

And thank you, too, for your kind words regarding my other post about gun violence. I left comments off because I have neither the will nor the energy to debate the truth with right-wing trolls who might cause trouble here. I nearly lost my eldest nephew to gun violence when he was 18. A couple of years later, his extremely rural high school was nearly shot up by a couple of students (tragedy avoided only because they arrived at the school on the first day of Spring Break and no one was there; they were later apprehended and served time). Charlie Kirk was no hero and he most certainly is NOT a martyr, and it sickens me to see the political right lionize him and his pro-gun violence rhetoric. I had to say something, you know?

I’m so sorry about your brother, my friend. Words can’t express my sorrow for the lives lost so senselessly and needlessly.

Thanks for your kind support, Diana. Here’s hoping beyond hope that things change for the better, and soon.

    1. Thanks, Peggy. A bit of winter imagery from December 2021. I’m not much of a winter person myself, to be honest, but I can appreciate the silence and the austere beauty of the cold months. I know it sounds strange for a deaf person to say I appreciate the silence, but to me it’s more of a profound spiritual silence, when the world has been stripped of pretense and the earth is in mourning for the loss of life and color. I really liked the imagery of the little snow birds on the branch. Japanese is such an intriguing language, so expressive and unique. I wish I could become fluent in it, but I can’t even manage English sometimes due to my deafness. Ah, well.

Glad you enjoyed these tanka, my friend. 😊
