“The Footbridge”

That derelict footbridge
Has finally failed
Stranding us on
Opposite shores
Of the abyss
Words
Like rotted planks
Litter the gorge
Below
Desires and dreams
Dashed
Upon indifferent rocks
Silence is all
I hear from you…

So glad she shared it. Such heartbreaking words. Left on the other shore. But still standing. With a bit of a limp.

Many thanks, Beth. Yes, a bit of a limp, indeed–I think my heart has been limping along for quite some time now. Glad to know you enjoyed this poem, my friend. Have a grand weekend. ☺️

Mike, the visuals are so stunning in this piece. The words are heartbreaking and the use of the metaphoric bridge speaks volumes to the pain and suffering of a soul that loved and never had closure. It is a very sad, yet explains that feeling of emptiness, one that feels like an unresolved death, a loss and heartbreak that can literally take years to recover from. A big thanks to Manuela for the publication and Mike this is stunning writing.

Thank you, Joni. I’ve always had a fondness for bridges and their metaphorical nature of connecting two sometimes disparate shores…and how broken bridges separate us from what we desire. For this poem, I had in mind an imaginary footbridge that spanned 9,000 miles to Singapore (those who know me will understand the symbolism) that had been sundered, leaving no chance of closure for me. When you can’t cross that gulf, there’s really not much you can do–you either jump into the abyss or you walk away and try to carry on, hoping someday that hole inside you will heal.
I’m glad this one resonated with you, my friend and writing buddy. Here’s wishing you and Scott a serendipitous weekend ahead. ☺️

Desires dashed on indifferent rocks below. The footbridge as all that failed to hold. This poem reaches across its own broken waters—even from opposite shores, the voice comes through clear and unflinching. 💙
Much love,
Khadija 💕🤗
