“The Grief of Winter”
(c) 2024 by Michael L. Utley

“In each flake
a brief eternity
the grief of winter
as December bleeds out
and January’s hell awaits

there shall be
no insensate oblivion
no benignant Lethe
no purgatorial reprieve
awaiting us on eternity’s cusp

only the purulent spoils
of our own wretchedness
a just reward for
embracing hate
and abandoning compassion…”

Burn, Baby, Burn…

This morning I received a comment on my post “A Few Haiku & Senryu (63)” with regards to this piece:

(#378)

our humanity
bleeds out in Gaza and Ukraine
just another day

The comment read (and I’m paraphrasing here since I immediately deleted it), “Thank YOU, Mr. President, for bombing Iran,” and setting it on fire, adding that he hopes to see Iran flattened to the same degree as Gaza. He ended his mini-maga-rant thusly: “Burn, baby, burn!”

I have my comments set to Moderation specifically to weed out trash comments from deluded right-wing maga cultist trolls such as this person, so fortunately I was able to delete the comment before it ever saw the light of day on my blog.

In my four years of blogging, I’ve seen only a handful of extremist maga cult blogs (four or five, tops), and I’m grateful for that. This WordPress community has been, in my experience, a safe haven for compassion and sanity, where folks care about one another and strive to exhibit the best of what it means to be human. But there’s always that one guy, right? There’s always that rotten apple in the barrel, that putrid potato in the cellar, that colony of mold on the loaf of bread, that illiterate third-grade bully who terrorizes the smaller kids but who’d shit his pants at the thought of harassing someone his own size.

Before deleting this person’s comment, I took a quick peek at his blog, and yeah, it was just as nasty as I imagined it would be, replete with hateful, obscene “own the libs” memes and maga propaganda. A few years ago, I ditched my Facebook and Twitter accounts for this very reason—those social media platforms have been overrun with right-wing extremists, and their owners—two of the most abhorrently evil men on the planet (Zuckerberg and Musk)–not only turn a blind eye to this maga cesspool of hatred on their sites, they also participate in it, encourage it, and rake in billions from it. And, because of this, right-wing extremism continues to thrive and spread like the cancer it is, affecting not only those still on their platforms but also those who have chosen not to associate with these anti-democracy, anti-America thugs.

I lost faith in humanity long ago. Growing up in a severely dysfunctional family in a state (Utah) dominated by a religious cult (mormonism) to which I did not belong will do that to a person. Yet…there’s a part of me that hurts when I see other people hurting, a part of me that cries out and yearns to help, to make things better, to assuage the tears and fears of my fellows here on this planet. My motto has always been “We’re All In This Together, We All Matter, We All Have Value…” But I find my compassion and resolve tested constantly nowadays by my fellow citizens here and abroad who obviously never read the memo about how to be a decent human being. And this leaves me wondering…am I wrong here? Am I an idiot for believing there is goodness in all of us? I mean, seriously? I’ve been mistaken plenty of times before when it comes to trusting people, to giving people the benefit of the doubt, and I’ve paid a heavy price more than once for my errors in judgment.

Perhaps the biggest question of all is, are these people–like the one who commented on my blog–too degenerate to be redeemed? Most religious folks will tell you there’s hope for everyone, or at least for most of us. But one needn’t be religious to hold out hope for humanity. At the same time, one must be realistic in one’s assessment of humanity, and that means recognizing that some folks are past the point of no return.

We have a “leader” who personifies the most heinous traits of the dark side of humanity, someone who has a blighted soul and no heart whatsoever, who is hellbent on destruction for the sake of destruction with no accountability at all. And this fascist felon/rapist/traitor monster has a following of at least 77 million like-minded trigger-happy cultists who will do his bidding without question, conscience or remorse. This person has now initiated an illegal, unconstitutional war with an adversary that posed no direct threat to our country, based on lies of weapons of mass destruction (jeez, where have we heard this before?), with absolutely no game plan, no permission from Congress and no consideration for how his blatantly criminal and inhumane actions will affect the world. And his legion of followers salivate at the thought.

I suppose I was right about one thing: we truly are all in this together, unfortunately.

Burn, baby, burn…

An Explanation…and a Request

I don’t want to presume that it’s a big deal to anyone else, but I feel like I need to offer an explanation as to why I’ve been unable to respond to comments regularly and in a timely manner as of late.

I’m having a lot of difficulty coping with the political situation here in the States. In all of my sixty-one years, I’ve never seen anything as destructive and sinister and downright evil as this fascist assault on our democracy being waged by the political right-wing and its reckless and violent maga base (and no, I won’t dignify that hate group by capitalizing those letters).

I lived through Nixon’s Watergate scandal in the ’70s and recall the jaw-dropping lawlessness of that foul and utterly despicable president and his feckless lackeys, the break-ins and lies and cover-ups and missing tapes and midnight purges and the shame all of it brought on America. And when it ended, finally, I remember thinking that nothing like that could ever happen again in America, that we’d be on guard to prevent another scandal of such proportions, and that the always morally suspect republican party had learned its lesson.

It has not.

And now, here we are, four months into a new fascist America, headed by a convicted felon, adjudicated rapist, and traitor who is busily blasting his way through our Constitution and annihilating our government, with a little help from his co-president and world’s richest asshole. Those of us who possess critical thinking skills saw this coming when this monster announced his intentions on his golden escalator to hell a decade ago. We knew what would occur if this psychopath somehow found his way to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. And we were right. With more than a little assistance from our biggest international adversary, this monster stole the White House in 2016 and set in motion his dark vision of what has been called America’s New Reich.

Everyone knows what happened after that. Needless to say, we are in deep shit now. America is on its knees and this monster wields the executioner’s axe. Millions of American citizens are in grave danger. Hate and violence are on the rise. Is a second civil war imminent? Likely so. The level of corruption is staggering and incomprehensible. The republican-controlled Congress is compromised and has fully capitulated to this madman. The conservative Judiciary has granted this monster near-total immunity. The Executive branch has been weaponized and turned into a virtual hit-squad to be used against political enemies and dissent. Right-wing media spreads conspiracy theories, lies and propaganda day and night. Ignorant, racist, bigoted people are emboldened to retaliate against imaginary threats with vitriol and fists and guns. The social safety net is set to be eliminated. The poor, elderly, sick and disabled, as well as women, immigrants, racial minorities, the LGBTQ+ community, and other marginalized groups have become targets of both right-wing politicians and fellow citizens. People are being kidnapped off the streets in broad daylight by unidentifiable masked assailants posing as ICE agents and shipped sans habeas corpus to gulags in foreign lands. Democratic lawmakers and non-partisan judges doing their jobs are being arrested on trumped-up charges (pun most definitely intended). And a new budget bill that will likely become law soon will gift billionaires trillions of dollars stolen from the poor and working class.

America has lost its global standing as that beacon of light on the hill, that shining example of democracy at which the rest of the world once marveled. “The land of the free, the home of the brave…” Not anymore. Now, our fascist Dear Leader cozies up to despots, attacks allies in the Oval Office, and openly desires to invade and conquer our neighbors and other nations in his psychotic, demented aspirations of expanding the American Empire.

I’m struggling, folks. Personally, I stand to lose everything because of these fascists. I rely on the social safety net because I’m disabled. I will lose my income, my healthcare and my housing sometime soon, and I will be rendered homeless. I am not prepared for this. I cannot survive as a homeless person. And this is constantly on my mind.

I never thought I’d live to see the death of my country. I never thought the republican party–greedy and power-lusting as it’s always been–would become turncoats and devolve into a death cult and go for democracy’s throat. Any thoughts of creativity, of writing poetry, die in infancy now. My mind is blank, nothing but the dull roar of fear and dread echoing between my ears.

So, please forgive me for any delays in responding to your kind comments on my blog. Please forgive me for neglecting your blogs. My blog is my only safe place and I never wanted it to become a political blog (and I still don’t). But this needs to be said because it’s the truth: America is in trouble and people will die because of this new fascist regime. Those 77 million people who voted for this—who voted for hate and violence and revenge and bigotry and discrimination and lower egg prices—will never represent the America I once knew and loved. They have brought shame and disgrace upon not only the United States but upon themselves and the rest of us as well. Those people are not Americans—they have betrayed America.

And now, a humble request…

Please, if you can, if you’re able, if you’re courageous, if you care about America and democracy and your fellow citizens, do whatever you can to fight this fascist regime. Speak up, use your voices, attend protest rallies, write and call your representatives, sign petitions, volunteer, talk to your families and friends and neighbors, speak truth to power. We need you now more than ever, and as one of my favorite online influencers has said, the power of the people is greater than the people in power. Shine the light of truth into this present darkness. Do something–anything–to resist. It’s up to us because no one else is going to save us from this most serious existential threat our democracy has ever faced.

Thanks for reading, friends.

in each flake
a brief eternity
the grief of winter
as December bleeds out
and January’s hell awaits

there shall be
no insensate oblivion
no benignant Lethe
no purgatorial reprieve
awaiting us on eternity’s cusp

only the purulent spoils
of our own wretchedness
a just reward for
embracing hate
and abandoning compassion

we have chosen darkness
consorted with the enemy
sold our souls in our
lust for power
and betrayed our fellows

January’s hell awaits
and we will all suffer
for the sins of those
who embrace fascism
racism and intolerance

those with black hearts
and frozen souls
have birthed a monstrosity
a nameless winter wendigo
whose reign of terror awaits

and what say you
you betrayers who have
cast your lot with madmen
who would see your fellows
dead or worse

what say you
when your turn shall come
when your wendigo god
regards you
with its slavering grin

our new world
a vast expanse of ice
a permafrost desolation
incessant howling winds
and the screams of the damned

winter’s grief
the delicate crystal latticework
of hiemal tears shattered
human warmth is dead
eternal winter has arrived

Ersatz patriots
Gabble lustily amid
Smoke and blood and screams
Mindless primal mob worships
Q-birthed abomination

What have we become
Sun sets on all we have known
Cultists rend and tear
The soul of democracy
Freedom’s heart weeps in darkness

We cannot survive
The lies of those who seek to
Silence our voices
We will not survive if we
Cower silently in fear
